Bogus man steals pensioner's handbag
Thursday, 19th October 2000.
A MAN posing as a gas official stole a handbag and a set of keys from a house in Haverhill yesterday.
The handbag contained a sum of cash and belonged to an elderly woman in her 70s in North Avenue shortly before midday.
Det Con Mark Scott, investigating, said: "The elderly victim was extremely shaken by this incident. She did ask the offender for identification and he flashed a piece of paper at her.
"Genuine officials have proper identification. They will not be offended if householders ask them to wait outside the house while details of the identification are checked."
He said it was a good idea to look up the phone number of the service involved in the telephone book instead of relying on the numbers provided on the identification.
The offender is described as white and short.
Anyone with information should contact Det Con Mark Scott at Haverhill police station on (01284) 774474.
