Bodybuilder aims for gold medal
Wednesday, 26th May 2010.
Haverhill Leisure Centre member Stuart Thomson will compete in the ASN East Anglia Bodybuilding Championships on June 6, supported by Abbeycroft Leisure.
Stuart, 28, of Vanners Road, Haverhill, is aiming to win a gold medal at the championships which take place at Britannia Pier in Great Yarmouth.
A member of the Leisure Centre gym for the last 12 years, Stuart started weight training at 16 after watching his dad Dale train.
He said: “My dad was my idol and my inspiration really. I wanted to be fit and healthy like him so I started using weights at home as a teenager and, as soon as I was 16, I joined the gym at Haverhill Leisure Centre.”
Stuart has been training intensively for the last 22 weeks for the competition and if he does well will automatically go through to the nationals in Birmingham on November 28. He will enter the competition on June 6 as Stuart Thomson from Abbeycroft Leisure.
He said: “To do well in the East Anglian championships would be an enormous achievement after the determination and dedication I have put in over the last 22 weeks. In my mind, to get anything less than a gold medal would be a real disappointment.
“It was the staff at Haverhill Leisure Centre who encouraged me to pursue weight training as more than just a form of exercise, putting me in touch with an ex-bodybuilder who has helped to devise a training programme specifically for this competition.
"Abbeycroft Leisure, which owns the Leisure Centre, has provided my kit for the competition and I will enter under their name. I cannot thank them enough as it has given me real confidence to do this.”
In preparation for the competition, Stuart has changed his diet and increased his cardio-vascular workout to burn off fat while increasing muscle.
Dominic Greenwood, general manager at Haverhill Leisure Centre, said: “Stuart’s achievements have been amazing. We have watched him progress for many years here at the centre and I’m really pleased that he has decided to enter the championships as a professional bodybuilder. We are behind him 100 per cent and wish him every success on June 6.”
