Body-builder aims for junior championship

Haverhill Leisure Centre duty manager Wes Purkiss hopes to take home the title of British Natural Bodybuilding Federation Southern Junior Champion later this month.
Wes, 20, has been bodybuilding for three years came second in the British Natural Bodybuilding Federation Southern Championships junior section in 2011.
But this year he hopes to take the title on June 23 at the competition in Bognor Regis.
As a warm-up, Wes will take part in the Anglian Bodybuilding Championships junior section in Great Yarmouth on June 2, an event he also came second in 2011.
He said: “I came second two years ago and I actually got through to the national finals of the British Natural Bodybuilding Federation but I wasn’t ready so I withdrew. But this year I am ready and I am going for the win.”
“To prepare for the competitions I have been on a strict ten-week, high-fat, moderate-carbs and high-protein diet and training in the centre’s gym. I’ve also used the natural Anglian Sports Nutrition supplements sold at the centre.”
Wes lives in Haverhill and has worked at the centre for four years. To train for the event he has been doing a cardio workout on the cross trainer every morning before breakfast and weights five times a week.
