Blaze erupts at factory
Thursday, 11th November 1999.
Firefighters from three counties were called in to fight a blaze in a chemical factory.
Fire spread from the ground floor to the first floor of the production plant at Borden Chemicals in Pipperell Way, Haverhill, at about 1.10pm last Thursday. The company has 70 employees.
Two teams of firefighters from Haverhill tackled the blaze together with crews from Stow-cum-Quy, Newmarket, Clare, Bury St Edmunds and Withersfield.
The fire then spread to the third floor and firefighters tackled the blaze wearing chemical protection suits and breathing apparatus.
Police closed nearby roads and used loudhailers to tell residents to stay indoors and keep their windows closed while fire crews brought the fire under control.
No-one was injured.
