Big medal haul for athletes

West Suffolk Athletic Club was represented at the Suffolk County Track and Field championships on Sunday by 48 athletes, their highest attendance for many years.
Between them they won an impressive array of medals and trophies, their 76 medals. including 32 golds, for championship winning performances, and the Haverhill area was well represented, fine results being achieved by three local athletes.
Jemma Thake performed her usual high standards taking gold medals in both 200 metres, in which she beat club-mate Cassie Chilvers into third place in a time of 26.0 sec, and in 300 metres, in which her time of 41.lsec was a new championship best performance.
In this race Chilvers went one better taking the silver medal in a personal best of 447sec.
Veteran Marilyn Anness took on five senior events and in a very successful day won three gold and two silver medals.
Gold came to her in triple jump, pole vault, and in the 3 km walk in which her time of 21 mm 33.7 sec knocked a full 90 seconds off her own championship record. She went on to win silver medals in hammer and shot putt.
Dianna Firbank from Wickhambrook, a first year under-15, showed her excellent potential when at her first championship she took the silver medal in high jump behind club colleague and nationally ranked jumper Wendy Meadows-Smith.
Firbank’s jump of 1.40m was a personal best and was higher than Wendy herself had jumped at the same stage in her development. One year on and Wendy, who hails from Woolpit, has exceeded 1.60m.
This was an excellent day all round for the West Suffolk club which continues to go from strength to strength on the track after a fine winter of cross country competition.
* A small squad of athletes from Haverhill Striders Athletics Academy brought home six medals and several personal best performances at the Suffolk Track and Field Championships in Ipswich.
Matt Deamer, 14, took gold in the under-15 boy’s high jump event, smashing the record for the second time in a number of weeks with 1.50m. He followed this with another gold in the long jump with 5.03m, and a personal best of 13.4 sec in the 100m.
Personal bests were also recorded by: Terry Samuels, 13, in the under-15 boy’s 1,500m and long jump, while Michael Wray,11, gained a personal best in the under-13 boy’s 800m event.
Robert Vaz, 13 took a second off his 200m time in the under-15 boy’s event in 32.7 sec.
Sophie Lang.14, captured bronze in the under-15 girls javelin and Mabon Dane won three silvers in the senior 110m hurdles, 2,000m steeplechase and 3km walk.
Charlotte Westdijk won the club athlete of the month award for April for her performances in the 800m.
