Bergen out for season

Thursday, 22nd November 2001.

HAVERHILL Rugby Club experienced problems ahead of their Division Two North trip to Colchester.

Skipper Tim Bergen was ruled out for the rest of the season after a knee operation and with the front-row forward unavailable the Suffolk club conceded the league points.

But they still travelled to honour the fixture as a friendly and received a 109 – 7 trhrashing for their troubles.

“We had only five first teamers available and so could not play a game with contested scrums,” said club spokesman Shaun McLeod-Jones.” But Colchester had arranged a vice presidents’ lunch and we are well aware of the revenue this brings to a juniot club.

“In view of this we agreed to take the best side we could to play a friendly and you could not fault our players who travelled. They never stopped running and tackling.”

Steve Bowak has taken over as skipper and his rewards was to score and convert Haverhill’s concolation try.

* Sawston had an off day at bottom club Swaffham, but still experienced few problems collecting the Division Three North points for a 22 – 7 victory.

From the start Sawston applied pressure and this brought a try for Robin Wardle that Olly Halliday converted before breaking through himself to score and convert the second try.

The fly-half added a penalty for a 17 – 7 half time lead and Richard Lintern wrapped up the points when collecting Wayne Grantham’s chip ahead.
