Bellringers pay tribute to former tower captain
Wednesday, 16th December 2009.
The bells of St Mary's parish church in Haverhill rang out this morning for the funeral of the man who was tower captain of its bellringers of 25 years.
Albert Wade, who died on December 2, aged 90, had been a bellringer for 50 years, and tower captain for half that time.
Bellringers gathered to ring before and after the service, and not muffled, as is conventional for funerals, at the request of Mr Wade, who didn't like muffled bells.
Mr Wade, who worked as a bricklayer on many of Haverhill's large building projects, and then spent seven years as caretaker of the former Cangle School, lived in Crowland Road.
