Beacon accolade for council
Thursday, 30th December 1999.
St Edmundsbury Borough Council has been named as one of only 42 local authorities in the country to be awarded Beacon status.
It was declared a Beacon Council after rigorous Government inspections and presentations by council staff to a panel of experts.
The award, in the sustainable development category, recognised the council's outstanding achievement in recycling and specifically its brown bin scheme to collect compostable waste.
Mike Brundle, leader of the council, congratulated everyone who had worked to achieve such a high level of recognition.
"This is a top award, putting us among the very best in the country. People in St Edmundsbury can take pride in their borough, knowing that it's leading the way when it comes to providing services," Coun Brundle said.
St Edmundsbury's pioneering rubbish scheme saves around 40,000 tonnes a year from being buried in landfill sites.
