Bandsmen raise the roof - for real

Tuesday, 22nd September 2009.

Haverhill Silver Band have a reputation locally for raising the roof wherever they play, but recently some of them did it for real.

In February 2008, band cornetist Tom Walker had a terrible shock when his centuries old barn near Thaxted went up in flames.

Tom's band cornet was in the barn which he used as a workshop and practice room, and was reduced to a pile of molten metal.

His house, standing very close, was also at risk with melting guttering and window glass.

Tom is a master carpenter who often works on film sets on location in this country and abroad and, wishing to recreate the barn in its original form, he imported tons of green oak which had been formed into the sides and roof of the barn.

This then needed lifting and positioning so that it could be secured.

A team of around a dozen, including several from the band, spent the day helping Tom with the building.

The band's next task is back on the musical front, when they are competing in the Pontin's Festival in north Wales on October 24, where they'll be up against bands from all over the country.

Locally you can hear a group from the band at the Tesco opening on Monday, September 28.

The whole band will be at Haverhill Arts Centre on Sunday, November 8, starting at 7.30pm, performing Big Band Brass (box office 01440 714140).
