Band rocks its way to the top ...
Thursday, 25th May 2000.
Haverhill band Oblivion failed to win the final of the town's Rock Competition, but again were decisive winners of the audience vote.
Alife-sized cardboard cut-out of drummer Michael Jamieson, who is on his honeymoon in the Dominican Republic , ended up in the crowd where he was "mobbed" and severely damaged.
The home band were first on and thoroughly enjoyed the show and their £50 prize.
Winners, who get £250 and future gigs, were Shanghai 75, from the Cambridge area, whose original songs included Grandma's Fatal Bovril Overdose.
Their lead singer Andrew Edwards also won the best vocalist award.
In second place were Oblivious, from the Long Melford area, who gave a very professional set, including accoustic ballard I'm not like you. They also won the songwriting award.
In third spot were Skin Walker from the Braintree area, a rock band which has linked with Braintree District Council's youth services to play several gigs. Their drummer Dave Hopkins won best musician.
Last year's winners Pedro Orange, now called Boomer, played while the judging was going on.
Judges were local musician Ken Butcher, Jeff Williams of the Whats on GB website, who gave each band a free advert, town councillor Kevin Griffin and Mandy Estridge of independent production company Junk Promotions.
It was the fifth annual Haverhill Rock Competition, which is organised and sponsored by Haverhill Town Council.
