Balcony's railings saved from vandalism
Thursday, 22nd July 1999.
RAILINGS from the balcony at the former Burton Cottage are to be moved from outside to inside Haverhill Library, as part of an arts projects the public is being invited to join.
The railings were saved from the former Burton Cottage youth centre, which was destroyed by fire before the library was built on the same site in Camps Road. They were used in a pergola in the library grounds, but have been constantly vandalised since it was created.
Now Library Manager Brenda Martin has gained £1,500 in funding from Suffolk County Council for a community arts project so the balcony railings can be used as part of an arts project inside the library building.
Local artist June Muscroft will lead the project and wants ideas and memories of the former Burton Cottage, as well as practical help from the public.
Children or adults are welcome to join in.
She will lead a series of workshops at the library from 10am to noon, starting on Saturday and continuing on Monday and Tuesday; Monday, August 2 and Tuesday, August 3; Monday, August 9 and Tuesday, August 10; Monday, August 16 and Tuesday, August 17.
Anyone interested is welcome to drop in for part or all of the session.
Ms Martin said the county council would also fund the work to remove the railings , which would be moved into the community education part of the building, with a mural created behind them. The finished work will go on show in September.
