Bad parking makes school access dangerous for children
Wednesday, 3rd February 2010.
Police are asking people who drive children to one of the schools in School Lane, Haverhill, to park more considerately.
A combination of congestion and dangerous parking has led to so many complaints that the issue is likely to be among Haverhill Safer Neighbourhood Teams' next set of priorities.
People using the area are afraid that the road is becoming so congested at dropping off and picking up times, that children's lives are being put at risk.
PC Rupert Beynon said: "If parents would just give an extra five minutes there are plenty of parking spaces up at the top of the lane near the rugby club.
"It would also be good if someone would volunteer to help organise the parking each day."
He said he believed a request had been put in for double yellow lines along one side of the road, which leads to Burton End Primary, St Felix Primary and Castle Hill Middle schools.
But that would take some time and it was necessary to do something before a child was hurt.
Currently cars are often parked on the zig-zag lines at the opproaches to crossings, and there were often arguments between drivers and pedestrians or other drivers.
