Arrest made, but warning on burglaries goes on

Wednesday, 28th August 2013.

Police have charged a 32-year-old man following a burglary in Haverhill last week.

Alexander Hockett of Elmdon Place, Haverhill, was arrested by police yesterday, and taken to the Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre.

He has since been charged with the burglary of a residential property in Beaumont Vale between Tuesday and Friday, August 20-23.

Hockett was due to appear at Bury Magistrates Court today.

* Police yesterday reminded residents to lock doors and windows after a number of burglaries in the area.

Officers continue to ask residents to remain vigilant and contact police on 101 if they have any information in relation to burglaries in the town.

Police appealed for information issued the warning residents yesterday to remain vigilant after four burglaries over the weekend.

The first incident occurred between 3.40am and 6am on Saturday in Fryth Close. Entry was gained via an insecure rear window and around £95 in cash was stolen.

The second burglary took place between 11pm on Friday and 7am on Saturday in Cross Close. It is unclear how entry was gained to the property, but no force had been used. £55 in cash was stolen from within.

The third offence occurred between 11.15pm on Sunday and 8.30am on Monday in Westbourne Court. Entry was gained via an open window and around £200 in cash and a quantity of jewellery was stolen.

Another incident, not believed to be linked to others differs from them in that it occurred in the daytime, between 12pm and 3.30pm on Monday in Withersfield Road.

Entry was gained by forcing open a rear window and an untidy search of the property saw some car keys taken, which were then used to steal a ‘59’ registration, beige Mercedes E250, which had been parked in the garage.

Insp Peter Ferrie, the local policing commander for Haverhill, said: “The spate of ‘creeper’ burglaries is directly targeting open or insecure doors and windows.

"I appeal to residents to ensure that they close and lock all ground floor doors and windows at night, otherwise they risk leaving an open invitation to a burglar.

“We are putting out extra police patrols in the town every night and will continue to until we catch those responsible.

"I urge anyone who may have information about who is committing these burglaries to come forward, as they have a huge impact on the lives of the victims.”
