Armned robbers escape with cash from post office raid
By Jo Deeks on Thursday, 16th March 2000.
ROBBERS armed with a shot gun and a sledgehammer terrified staff at a village post office before steeling cash.
The two thieves, who were wearing balaclavas, burst into the post office at Kedington, near Haverhill, at around 10.15am on Friday.
One of the men had a single-barrelled weapon, thought to have been a shotgun.
The pair fled with an undisclosed amount of cash. No shots were fired and no-one was hurt.
They left in a maroon Vauxhall Cavalier believed to have been driven by a third man.
The car, which had been stolen from the Tesco car park in Braintree the previous day, was found abandoned in School Crescent, Kedington, 15 minutes after the raid. The robber carrying the gun was wearing a black Nike jacket. Both men were wearing gloves.
This raid came after a similar robbery at Great Shelford's High Green post office on Thursday afternoon.
Two men, one armed with a wooden mallet, threatening staff before stealing cash, stamps and air mail letters.
A Suffolk police spokesman said: "It is too early to say whether the same people were involved."
Police appealed for anyone who may have seen the car to come forward.
Anyone with information should contact Haverhill CID on (01284) 774100.
