Armed Hijacker Found

By Steve Bryant on Wednesday, 10th June 2009.

THE dramatic events of yesterday evening were brought to a close peacefully by Suffolk Police officers at 5.40am this morning at an address in Newton Place, Haverhill.

Police today said a 36-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of firearms offences and a 30-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Both men are currently being held at Parkside Police Station in Cambridge.

Although Police have not named the suspect they have in custody, it is believed to be Robert Inman, 36 following a hunt for an armed man who hijacked two vehicles at gunpoint yesterday.

Inman, stole a Police van from two officers at gunpoint in Orton Malbourne, Peterborough at around 3pm yesterday afternoon. The officers were left at the scene unharmed.

Inman drove the Police van out of the city and it was later found abandoned in a gargage at Norman cross, near Yaxley, Peterborough.

It is believed he then ran across fields before hijacking another car - a silver Volkswagen - at gunpoint from a member of the public. The driver was left unharmed.

The silver Volkswagen was found abandoned in Withersfield Road in Haverhill at around 5.00pm last night. Police Armed Response Officers closed off a section of the road for more than an hour while they carried out a search of the area, while the Cambridgeshire police helicopter circled overhead.
