Are you part of Suffolk’s clean sweep?

Tuesday, 20th October 2015.

The Suffolk Waste Partnership is encouraging more residents to help make Suffolk the greenest county, by joining in with a community clean-up to help improve our cherished green spaces and neighbourhoods.

To support volunteers’ efforts, all local district and borough councils in Suffolk are keen to provide equipment and arrange for removal of the gathered litter afterwards, at any time of year. If you or members of your community are planning a community litter pick, contact your local district or borough council with your group name, address, a contact name, email and / or telephone number, and the date and location of the planned pick. The Council will be happy to assist with the provision of the equipment you need (subject to availability), and to arrange to come and remove the litter that you have gathered up if required.

Chairman of the Suffolk Waste Partnership, Cllr Clive Arthey, said: “We congratulate the efforts of all local community groups, families, neighbours and individuals who want to tackle litter in their area. We are always keen to offer practical support to help these activities at any time of year, no matter how large or small.

“So far this year, over 190 groups across Suffolk have registered their litter picks; with every effort contributing towards keeping our county green and clean. I’m very proud of the tremendous work that our residents already do to help improve the environment, but we’d always welcome even more volunteers to help towards making Suffolk the greenest county.

“Of course, we’d all prefer not to have to pick litter up at all, and I would urge everybody to help prevent litter in the first place by making sure that their rubbish is recycled or disposed of correctly.”

Litter doesn’t just spoil the look of our environment; it causes pollution and harms wildlife. It also imposes an unnecessary cost on Council Tax payers (it is estimated that the cost of clearing England’s 30million tonnes of litter is around £885,000,000 per year). It is up to everybody to make sure that our rubbish doesn’t end up in the wrong place, either as litter or worse still, fly-tipped in our countryside or our neighbourhoods, so remember the following tips to help prevent litter and fly-tipping:

·Always use a litter bin, and always clear up after your dog

·At home, always keep your own recycling and rubbish fully contained within your wheeled bins so that animals and the wind cannot scatter it

·Never allow your own waste to fall into the hands of rogue waste collectors

An unsolicited offer to have waste removed cheaply may be tempting, but householders must ensure that anyone taking their waste away is going to dispose of it legally, and not allow it to end up fly-tipped in our environment.

The Suffolk Waste Partnership (SWP) is a strategic partnership of the county, district and borough councils, which works together to continuously improve waste management services throughout Suffolk.
