Arcade suggestion for High Street

Thursday, 20th December 2012.

A town councillor has suggested roofing the High Street pavements like an arcade could help prevent illegal parking.

Cllr Gary Stroud told Haverhill Town Council on Tuesday he had seen the system in operation in Eastleigh in Hampshire, and the posts were close enough together to prevent cars getting in between.

He said it looked very attractive and councillors agreed the idea was worth looking into.

Councillors have begun to take careful note of systems in operation in other towns they visit. Cllr Clive Turner reported that in Windsor bins were placed carefully so as to obstruct parking and the effect looked good.

Town clerk Will Austin reported on recent initiatives taken by himself and PC Will Wright to deter motoprists from breaking regulations.

Cllr Tim Cook said he was still in favour of a towaway system which struck at random.

"I think it is a way of achieving enforcement and it would not have any detrimental effect, whereas clamping would be detrimental," he said.

Mr Austin said the High Street businesseswere overwhelmingly of the opinion that anything of that kind would give a bad impression of the town.

Cllr Cook said there were plenty of empty disabled spaces in the car parks and yet the street was full of blue badge holders parking illegally.
