Appeal after boy's bit of birthday bike bother

Wednesday, 27th October 2004.

SCHOOLBOY Callum Farrant will remember the bike he received for his ninth birthday - after going over the handlebars and ending up in hospital.

Callum, of Robin Close, Haverhill, is bruised but otherwise unscathed after his ordeal, but he and mum Karen would like to thank a stranger who stopped to help him when he went into shock after the accident.

Callum got his new bike on Saturday and was riding into the town on Sunday morning to get a safety helmet when the accident happened .

Mrs Farrant said: "He said the floor was slippery and he thinks he skidded on some leaves. He went head first over his handlebars and was badly bruised and pretty shaken up by it.

"I phoned an ambulance, but as we were waiting for it this man came along with his two dogs.

"We waited about 20 minutes and he stayed with us the whole time. He said he was a first aider and that Callum was in shock, so he kept talking to him to keep him awake.

"I did not know what to do, so it was really reassuring to have him there until the ambulance came.

"He had a whippet with him called Bella and another dog called Monty, but we do not know his name. I am very grateful to him and would really like to thank him for staying with us as he did."

Callum, a pupil at Coupals Primary School in Haverhill, was taken to West Suffolk Hospital and released after treatment.
