Another romp for Haverhill

Thursday, 10th February 2000.

HAVERHILL have their eyes set firmly on a league and cup double after another big-points win at Castle Playing Fields.
Mistley were the latest side to go through the mincing machine that has already accumulated 450 points in winning eight successive games in Eastern Counties League Division Four North.
But Saturday's 77-0 victory, Haverhill have conceded only 41 league points this season, also propelled the club into the semi-final of the Suffolk Plate.
And such is the bubbling confidence in the club that not even an away draw at Division Three North leaders Ipswich YMCA has dampened the conviction that some silverware is on its way to the Haverhill clubhouse.
Nobody left in the cup frightens us," said coach Sean McLeod-Jones.
"A draw at Ipswich will give us a good idea where we stand, but we are certainly not worried by them.
"It will be a test, but we really feel we can win it."
Like every match this season, Saturday's success was based on the powerful front row of Graham Anderson, Paul Bergin and Dan Rondeau, a combination that coach McLeod-Jones considers the best in the county.
"There is nobody in Suffolk to touch our front row," he claims. "They provide us with such a great platform and still manage to get around the park better than most front rows."
But the star of the latest win was undoubtedly former Sudbury skipper Mark Jury, who helped himself to four of his side's 12 tries, as well as creating several more.
The best came when he opened play on his own try line, created a couple of metres of space before passing out. He then kept pace with the move and was up to take the scoring pass at the other end of the field.
Skipper Pete Youngs also touched down twice to take his season's tally to 24.
The other tries came from Carl Anderson (2), Steve Bowes, Chris Giles, Colin McArdle on his debut and Steve Power, who also kicked six conversions.
"At times we played some really classy rugby," said the coach. "It was particularly pleasing that we also went another game without conceding any points."
