Thursday, 24th May 2001.
A YOUNG hairdresser from Haverhill is celebrating success in a national competition.
Alexa Cuttriss, 17, claimed third place in the National Hairdressers' Federation Spring Challenge at Birmingham's NEC with a hairstyle based on a volcano theme.
She said: "I cried when it was announced that I had come third. This is the thing that I enjoy most about hairdressing the competitions and I'll be looking out for another one soon."
Alexa, who works at Sonia's Hair and Beauty Salon in Queen Street, Haverhill, competed in the "avant-garde" category and used her sister Hayley, 16, as her model. The prize for third place was £25 and a new hairdryer.
Alexa is no stranger to success, having won the year one day release Disco Nights competition at West Suffolk College, Bury St Edmunds, last year.
She will complete her NVQ Level Two in Hairdressing at West Suffolk College next month.
Sonia Humphrey, owner of Sonia's, also took part in the NEC event, competing in the bridal section.
She said: "I would like to say thank-you to everyone who helped us to take part Brides, Hammonds Hire and The Flower Shop."
CAPTION: A cut above the rest … Alexia Cuttriss, 17, who was placed third in a national competition in Birmingham with her volcano-inspired haircut.
