Activity programme for young disabled relaunched

Thursday, 26th May 2011.

A programme of exciting social activities for young people with disabilities is being re-launched in Haverhill next month.

Disability charity Optua will be running the ‘Teaming Up’ sessions from Monday, June 20, thanks to funding from Suffolk County Council’s Activities Unlimited Service.

Teaming Up aims to give young people with disabilities or additional needs the opportunity to gain more independence, confidence, self esteem and vital social skills, while taking part in everyday fun leisure activities. The project ran across Suffolk last year and the new funding means Optua can run more sessions this year.

The Haverhill weekly sessions are aimed at young people aged 18-25 and will run every Monday evening from June 20 to August 22.

The evening activities will include bowling, cinema, swimming, meals out and visits to interesting places.

Karl Daniels, Teaming Up co-ordinator, said: “We’re really excited and pleased to receive funding for this project for another year.

"Everyone who came to Teaming Up sessions last year really enjoyed themselves and we’re looking forward to running them again in Haverhill. We hope to attract some new people as well as all those who enjoyed Teaming Up last year.”

Optua is also looking for young people to volunteer at the Teaming Up sessions. For more information or to register for any of these activities please contact Karl Daniels on 01473 836770 or email tup@optua.org.uk

Optua’s Leisure Service also runs a social night for disabled adults of any age on the third Thursday of the month at the Harvester in Phoenix Road.

The social nights are running from 6.45pm–9.15pm on the following dates: June 16, July 21, August 18, September 15, October 20, November 17 and December 22.
