Academy picks up its own new rugby kit from Twickenham
Tuesday, 26th March 2013.
Students from Castle Manor Academy and in primary schools beyond are still benefiting from outstanding rugby provision as part of the academy’s commitment to all-through learning.
Last week two representatives from the academy’s own rugby team visited Twickenham to collect their very own custom-made rugby kit.
The kit is a welcome boost to a very successful rugby scheme that works across the Castle Partnership Academy Trust.
The secondary age teams have competed in approximately 25 fixtures this season against opponents from all over Western Suffolk including schools from Newmarket, Bury and in the Suffolk County Cup Tournament.
This week that trend will continue as they play in a tournament hosted at Haverhill Rugby club on March 28. The team has grown as a result of the coaching delivered by the academy's own ex-international rugby coach, RFU sponsored coach and the skills that have been passed down to the committed and successful PE team at Castle Manor Academy.
The skills haven’t stayed within the academy, though, as they have been arranging for the RFU coach to visit local primary schools, alongside young sports leaders, to improve the town's access to tag rugby.
On Wednesday Castle Manor Academy hosted a Primary Tag Rugby tournament for year six pupils. In wintry conditions six local primary schools gathered at Castle Manor Academy to compete in the tournament.
Mixed squads from Place Farm Primary Academy, St Felix, Clements, Stanley Drapkin, Thurlow and Hundon played a round robin tournament of five matches each.
Coaches from Haverhill Rugby Club gave up some of their time to referee and provide some coaching tips to the participants. Sports leaders from Castle Manor Academy supported all the teams and managed the scoring to help the tournament go with a bang.
All teams participated with determination in over two hours of near constant physical activity and did not seem to notice the sleet and rain.
The overall winners were Stanley Drapkin, from Steeple Bumpstead, with St Felix narrowly beating Place Farm Primary Academy to second place by one point.
PE teacher Tony Dixon, who organised the tournament with the support of the students, reflected on the competition, saying: “The Tag Rugby Tournament was a great introduction for children to experience the fun and physical side of rugby in a competitive situation.
"All the games were played to a high standard and demonstrated great ability and sportsmanship throughout the competition.”
Rugby continues to be an integral part of the sports curriculum at Castle Manor Academy and throughout the Partnership.
PE teacher Duncan Ainge also reflected on the fantastic growth in rugby at the Castle Partnership Academy Trust.
He said: “We would welcome any interest from local community links to support the outstanding rugby provision at our academy, be it sponsorship, assistance for fixtures and coaching, or any other specialism to develop rugby across the age range of the Castle Partnership Academy trust as its grows from strength to strength.”
