Academy part-funds police community support officer

Monday, 3rd September 2012.

A Haverhill police support officer begins work this week based at Samuel Ward Academy, as part of partnership scheme between the police and schools.

The move represents the result of a year of work by Haverhill police's schools liaison offcer PC Will Wright to build up a partnership between police and schools.

To begin with, PCSO Woodward, who has been working in Haverhill since March, will be dedicated to Samuel Ward, but it is hoped to bring other schools on board as the scheme develops.

A similar scheme has been in operation at a school in Felixstowe for a number of years, but PC Wright said each town would need to develop the idea differently to cater for its particular needs.

POlice officers will still go into schools as they have done untilnow, but PCSO Woodward will deal with school issues on a day-to-day basis.

The academy is match-funding PCSO Woodward, so he will work closely with head teacher Howard Lay, under clear policing priorities for PCSOs.

"Other schools in the town were offered the opportunity, but Samuel Ward is the only one which has embraced that so far," said PC Wright.

"I have worked in this project for a year to get where we are today. It will be a great opportunity for Lee to develop the role, which will include investigation, prevention, education and advice.

"For instance he will be at all parents' evenings and in school during the day, depending on his shift."

PCSO Woodward will continue to work on his other duties out of school time and at weekends.
