A Big Job For a Big Man!
Tuesday, 16th May 2006.
Nick Martin, who spent his early career attracting fresh industry to Haverhill, is to return to the town to spearhead a new town centre management scheme.
Nick will work on a part-time basis with traders, residents and other organisations to promote Haverhill, secure funding for town centre initiatives and act as a contact point for businesses.
He will also promote the vitality and viability of the town while taking an active role in the emerging Haverhill Masterplan, in which St Edmundsbury has pledged to invest £10 million over the next decade.
Nick, who began his career at the Haverhill Urban District Council 30 years ago, where he worked to attract business from London, said:
“I am thrilled to be back in Haverhill and able to give the town my full attention. The town’s industrial base has grown from strength to strength over the years, with some wonderful new investment taking place. There is a new energy and optimism about Haverhill, and what we need now is a town centre worthy of a prosperous and leading regional manufacturing town.”
He added:
“My task is to help capitalise on all that is good in the town. It is an exciting challenge
and I am grateful for the opportunity to raise the profile of the town, and to try to bring to a happy conclusion many of the aspirations I have long held for Haverhill. I have a huge passion for the town and have seen Haverhill emerge from its chrysalis to become one of the most dynamic market towns in the region.”
The appointment has been welcomed by Cllr Jeff Stevens, Deputy Leader of St Edmundsbury and chairman of the council’s Haverhill Area Working Party.
He said:
“The future looks bright for Haverhill, with significant investment planned for the coming years to ensure the town centre is vibrant and thriving. Nick has vast experience and his appointment should prove highly beneficial to cementing the vitality of the town.”
The council has committed £105,000 over a three-year period to the development of the town centre management scheme. This will be used to establish a Town Centre Management Forum, made up of representatives from local business, the public sector, voluntary organisations and town centre residents.
Town centre management in Bury St Edmunds is already very successful, bringing together a raft of organisations to boost the town’s vitality and viability. Its members also promote the town through a number of events, such as continental and flower markets and Christmas fairs. Nick, a former international rugby player, previously worked for St Edmundsbury, where his role covered town centre management in Bury St Edmunds and economic development throughout the borough.
