20mph speed limit scheme for estate

By James Fuller on Thursday, 16th August 2001.

A £50,000 road calming project, aimed at curbing speeding and dangerous driving, is being proposed for an area in Haverhill including reducing speed limits to 20mph.

The aim of the measures, put forward by St Edmundsbury Council, is to reduce traffic danger in the Chalkstone Estate area.

Steve Boor, a special projects officer at the council, said: "The scheme will modify and extend the measures already in place on the Chalkestone Estate.

"The stretches affected will be, the section of Chalkstone Way from the junction with Millfields Way down to the junction with Shetland Road, and, the section of Millfields Way from the junction with Chalkstone Way to the junction with Manor Road.

"We have had a number of complaints of speeding on these stretches and there have been some accidents.

"It seems that as people leave the areas that are already calmed they then speed up to unacceptable levels.

"If the proposals get the go ahead, then we are also thinking of reducing the current speed limit of 30mph to 20mph.

"We are only at the pre-consultation stage at the moment but in September we will be going out to the residents and asking them what they think.

"If the results of the consultation show us that the residents are in favour of the project then the work should be completed around Christmas time."

The calming measures are likely to include around 20 new speed humps, or cushions, which are more bus friendly.
