“We lost our way”

Thursday, 20th June 2002.

Haverhill lost out to Woolpit, losing their top-of-the-table clash by six wickets after becoming bogged down in mid innings.

Things started well enough and, although they lost Scott Webb for 24, the scoreboard was ticking along nicely.

But then the innings almost ground to halt and 30 overs had gone before the total reached 100.

Stand-in skipper Simon Youngs — who replaced holidaying captain Steve Jones for the Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship encounter on Saturday — tried to lift the tempo with 45 from 43 balls.

And Neil Winter, who was the top run-getter for Haverhill in the previous week’s victory over strugglers Brockley, continued the work until falling for 97 off the final ball of the innings to leave his side vulnerable on 199 for 4.

“His wicket earned them an extra bowling point and meant we missed out on the batting point for 200,” said Youngs.

“But our problem had not been at either end of the innings but in the middle when we rather lost our way.”

Woolpit were out of the blocks like a rocket, scoring 30 from the first four overs before Micky Rinaldi (2 for 21) took two wickets and they slumped to 35 for 3.

But the bowler was injured in his early burst and could not return as Adrian Bullet (90 not out) steered his side to victory at 200 for 4, keeping them in second spot level on points with leaders Harwich & Dovercourt and one place ahead of Haverhill.
