'Slave' Shows His Charitable Side
Thursday, 13th May 2004.
Six hours of domestic chores face pub customer Kevin Forrester, after his services were bought for £40 by two ladies in a charity slave auction.
Mr Forrester was just one of the slaves whose services were up for grabs at the event held at the Bell pub in High Street, Haverhill, which raised around £1,200 for the premature baby unit at West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds.
Sharon Atherton and Perry Butler bought the slave between them and made him do ironing and housework, help get the children ready for the day and do a weekly shop at Sainsbury's.
They also did some extra collecting and made a total of £180 for the unit.
"The slave auction was good fun, so we thought we would buy one between us," Sharon said.
"I was not sure if he would even turn up, but he was there at 10am on the dot, dressed up as a woman. Most people thought it was a laugh and we raised quite a bit going round with him."
