'Robust' policing promised after two PCs assaulted

Monday, 14th November 2011.

Haverhill's new police inspector has promised 'robust' action against troublemakers in the town centre after two more policemen were assaulted on Saturday morning.

This is the third incident in four weeks when poloice officers have been assaulted in the execution of their duty, and Insp Peter Ferrie said he was 'upset' that it had happened again.

The incident happened around 11am in Queen Street when officers were called to deal with a public order incident involving two young men.

Both were being dealt with for public order offences when one of them assaulted the officers, punching one in the face and kneeing the other in the knee, the inspector explained.

"Although I am upset that more police officers have been assaulted in the town centre, officers have arrested and charged an offender, which shows how utterly determined we are to crack down.

"We will put the necessary officers in place to ensure all offenders are dealt with robustly."

Daniel Dale, 21, of Glemsford Place has been charged with two offences of assaulting a police officer and with a public order offence.

Kane Burton, 19, of Camps Road, has been charged with being drunk and disorderly in a public place.
