'Pay Up Madam Or You Face Jail'

Thursday, 22nd September 2005.

Brothel madam Suzanna Culling has been told she must pay more than £136,000 after making more than £1.5 million from vice.

Earlier this year, Culling went to prison for three months after she pleaded guilty to six charges of running three brothels, including one in the centre of Cambridge.

Last week, the 38 year old mother of three was back for a proceeds of crime hearing in front of Judge Seddon Cripps who had jailed her at St Albans Crown Court.

Culling, of Earls Green, Haverhill, made £500 a day from her three brothels.

She ran prostitutes from a picturesque lock keepers cottage and rooms above an opticians in Herfordshire, as well as a flat in Ravensworth Gardens, Petersfield, Cambridge.

After listening to the prosecutions case that they should be allowed to seize her assets as well as submissions from her legal team, Judge Cripps made his ruling. After listening to arguments from both sides and examining documentation setting out what she owned, Judge Cripps said he was satisfied Culling had enjoyed a "criminal lifestyle".

And he said he was satisfied she had benefited from her crimes to the tune of £1,677,312.

The judge ordered her to hand over £136,803 to the prosecuting authorities and gave her six months to come up with the money.

He said she faced two years in jail if she failed to pay.

Culling's girls were both British and foreign and worked one at a time with the help of a maid. When one girl finished another took over on a rotation basis. She would advertise in local newspapers.

Culling was arrested on Thursday, July 15th, last year after complaints from local residents about "comings and goings".

It was estimated each brothel was working seven days a week and making £500 a day.

The charges Culling admitted to related to a 16 week period between Monday, March 15th and Wednesday, July 14th last year.
