'Oscar' win for council's hard work
Thursday, 22nd March 2001.
SUFFOLK County Council has been awarded the local government equivalent of an Oscar for its hard work and commitment.
TV personality Maureen Lipman handed the accolade Council of the Year to Suffolk for what she described as "staggering achievements".
It is the first time a county council has won the award and the second time Suffolk has been on the shortlist.
Suffolk has already been given Beacon status by the Government for its support of children leaving care and raising school standards.
Under the Beacon scheme the council now shares its expertise with other councils.
Lin Homer, chief executive, said: "This is a great day for the county council. National recognition is not easy to achieve but we've made it straight to the top of the premier league."
She added: "We won't be resting on our laurels. We will continue to keep improving as quickly as we can."
The awards are organised by the Local Government Chronicle.
