'Extended Family' To Share In Christmas Fun
Thursday, 11th December 2003.
Stuart Asham and his family will be tucking into their turkey on Christmas Day with about 40 other people, some of them complete strangers.
Salvation Army captain Stuart, his wife Paula and sons Ryan, nine and Simon 14, have spent their last three Christmas Days at the Salvation Army Hall, looking after people who would otherwise have spent the day on their own.
Far from having a dull day, Stuart said the celebrations have been a lot of fun and he would like to hear from anyone else who would like to join in the celebrations, or volunteers who could help.
He said "It is quite hard work and we end up exhausted, but it is very rewarding. Last year people just got up and did impromptu turns, we had a 91 year old showing us how to do ballroom dancing. This year we have got karaoke in the afternoon. The children have been quite happy as long as they are with us, Ryan walks around with mince pies and sweets for everyone.
"We have got 40 booked in at the moment and three volunteers apart from us, as well as people coming in to do the vegetables and the washing up."
