£60,000 windfall to pay for activities
Thursday, 30th December 1999.
A WELCOME seasonal present has been announced for Samuel Ward Upper School, in Haverhill, with a £60,000 Lottery grant for after-school activities.
Samuel Ward, which which was recently named as one of the top 50 most improved schools in the country, will receive the cash over three years. It will support the school's Study After School Project, working with Chalkstone and Clare Middle Schools.
The £59,605 comes from the new Opportunities Fund to support out of school hours learning. It will enable the three schools to implement plans for both computer-based and tutor-led studies each evening after school.
A pilot scheme at Samuel Ward funded by the Prince's Trust demonstrated great demand for out of hours use of computer facilities, with 25 to 50 students regularly attending specialist classes on Monday nights.
Peter Roberts, headteacher, warmly welcomed the award.
"This grant will be of enormous value to both Upper and Middle School students including those who lack appropriate home study facilities or for whom additional tutorial support can mean a leap forward in their learning," he said.
Samuel Ward plans to add a Breakfast Study Club and Clare Middle School will be able to fund additional transport for village based pupils.
Both Chalkstone and Clare will be able to set up the "Success Marker" integrated computer based learning scheme to reinforce literacy and numeracy work.
