£4m store refit gets tills ringing
By Emiko Priest on Thursday, 9th August 2001.
IT WAS a bumper weekend of trading for a supermarket after a major refit.
The Haverhill branch of Sainsbury's has reported a surge in trade after reopening last week, with shoppers flocking to see the new look.
Mr Chadwick declined to give any figures, but said: "We have been extremely busy over the weekend it has been significantly better than we could have expected.
"It may partly be due to the fact that we were closed for a week our customers have been stocking up."
The grand opening came just a week after the store closed for the £4 million refit.
Steve Chadwick, the duty manager, said: "The store has been transformed in a week, and it's been a 24-hour operation since we closed. Anything is possible."
The store is 3,000 sq ft larger and now holds an extra 3,000 new product lines.
In addition to the replacement and repositioning of all the fixtures and fittings, two new counters, meat and salad, have also been installed.
Mr Chadwick said: "A lot of effort has gone into it and we hope to offer a better range of goods for people.
"We want to be the best and offer the best and we want to attract new customers."
Majorettes and balloon artists joined shoppers and staff at the relaunch, which was so busy there were reports of people abandoning trolleys because they could not get round.
