£15,000 for voluntary organisations
By Martin Chapman on Monday, 2nd April 2001.
TWO of Haverhill's voluntary organisations are set to receive extra funding from St Edmundsbury Borough Council's Development and Finance Committee which will total over £15,000.
In January, Committee members approveed a grant of just under £12,000 for Haverhill Association of Voluntary Organisations (HAVO) and an around an extra £3,000 specifically for a Money Advice Project at the Citizens Advice Bureau in town, which is to be included when the Council Tax for 2001/02. These additional amounts were approved at the meeting last week, and takes the total Borough grant to the Haverhill CAB to over £80,000 in the next year.
Committee Chairman and Vice-Chairman, Councillors John Wallace and John Griffiths, visited both organisations in March to familiarise themselves with their work. They discussed the grant, a proposed service level agreement, and also outlined the long term financial constraints which face St Edmundsbury.
Afterwards, Councillor John Wallace said:"Both of these organisations contribute greatly to the health and social wellbeing of the Haverhill area and we welcomed the chance to meet them. We were impressed by the solid commitment and undoubted enthusiasm shown at both organisations."
He went on to say: "We hope that the large grant to HAVO, accepted as a one-off at that level although the Council is committed to continued support, will help to establish it firmly at the centre of voluntary work in the area. It is essential that the CAB seeks new partnerships to add to their expertise"
HAVO is an umbrella group representing 135 voluntary organisations and the Council's grant will ensure the organisation has suitable premises. The grant for the CAB's Money Advice Project is for three years.
